The Zachys dinner - An evening with burgundies from Nuits-Saint-Georges
Four Seasons Hotel

Dear Members,

For the month of September, we are proud to host Mr David Wainwright, Managing Director of Zachys Asia. Zachys is a fourth generation family fine wine business based out of Scarsdale, New York. It was started in 1944 by the current chairman, Don Zacharia's father. Zachys expanded into the business of fine wine auction in 2002 and has been active in the wine auction scene in Hong Kong since 2008.

David began his wine career at Christie's in London in the late 1990s as a protégé of Michael Broadbent where he spent 10 years as the department's lead business getter and taster. As well as researching for his first book David also judges at competitions and writes and tastes for UK's two leading wine publications, Decanter and The World of Fine Wine. He runs a fine wine events program for Stellenbosch Charity, The Pebbles Project and also hosts a series of very serious tastings and dinners across Asia.

Nuits-Saint-Georges which gives its name to Côte de Nuits is the longest commune in Côte d'Or. It stretches 5km joining Vosne-Romanée to the north and Premeaux to the south. Nuits-Saint-Georges can be divided neatly into three sections. To the north of the town, the soils resemble those of Vosne-Romanée, dominated by limestone and pebbles with small amounts of clay. Wines from this section tend to exhibit more of the finesse and elegance of Vosne. South of the town lies the heart of Nuits-Saint-Georges, which includes the premier crus of Pruliers, Roncières, Cailles, Vaucrains and Les Saint-Georges, after which the commune takes its suffix. The soils generally have a more even mix of clay and limestone. South of here lies the third section which comprises the commune of Prémeaux-Prissey whose wines are entitled to be called Nuits-Saint-Georges. Interestingly, much of this section consists of monopole vineyards which perhaps give the wines more individuality.

For this dinner, the flights of wines will take us from Clos de la Maréchale which marks the southern border of the appellation, through Les Roncières and Les Pruliers to Aux Chaignots in Côte Vosne. We are privileged to have David share with us his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge on burgundies. He will present some of the finest premier crus from Nuits-Saint-Georges and explain their complexities over a sumptuous dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel.

We are grateful to Zachys Asia and David for making this event possible. Members will have priority over guests during the first 48 hours after the sending out of this bulletin. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
