Paul Jaboulet Aîné Wine Dinner

Dear Members,

We are fortunate to have the company of Principal Brand Ambassador Jean Luc Chapel of the house of Paul Jaboulet Aîné visit us in late October to acquaint us with their exceptional Rhône wines. All those amongst us who love Rhône wines will no doubt have tasted their most iconic wines from the hill of Hermitage.

Legend tells of a crusader knight, Gaspard de Stérimberg, who returned home wounded in 1224, and was given permission to build a small chapel atop a granite hill with steep slopes next to the Rhône River and near the present town of Tain-l'Hermitage. Here he remained living as a hermit for the rest of his life, and with time the hill became known as the hill of Hermitage. Over the centuries, vines were grown and thrived here, and the hill is by some seen as the spiritual home of the Syrah grape variety.

Between 1834 to 2006, Paul Jaboulet Aîné belonged to the Jaboulet family. They owned about 100 hectares of the best Rhône vineyards, including 26 hectares of Hermitage. The company was sold in 2006 to the Frey family, who also owns Chateau La Lagune and the Champagne house of Billecart-Salmon. Caroline Frey is the daughter of Swiss financier Jean-Jacques Frey, and she is now largely responsible for production of their Rhône wines. We are very fortunate to be able to taste some of their best wines.

We will start with Condrieu Domaine des Grands Amandiers 2010, a newly-launched vineyard under Caroline Frey. Next , we will have a Hermitage Chevalier de Stérimberg 2010, an excellent vintage and one of Caroline's personal pet projects. We will then have two vintages of the Crozes Hermitage Thalabert, the 1998 and the 2009, both being exceptional vintages and being more than 10 years apart, we can appreciate their aging potential. Their iconic wine is of course their 'La Chapelle' and again we will be delighted with two vintages: the 1991 and the 2007. The 1991 is drinking exceptionally well now, whilst the 2007 is Caroline's first official La Chapelle vintage which she produced.

For this dinner, we will dine at another iconic institution, the Alkaff Mansion. Built in 1920s by Arab immigrants it was abandoned during WWII. It re-opened as a restaurant in the 80s, but closed down in the 2003. Recently reopened after much renovation, the restaurant is serving Italian food under the helm of Chef Marco Guccio.
Members will have priority over guests during the first 48 hours after the sending out of this bulletin. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
