Piemonte Winemakers dinner at La Barca
La Barca Ristorante

Dear members,

For the month of May, I am pleased to present an exploration of the wines of Piemonte, Italy with no less than 3 winemakers from the region. The society is proud to host Alfio Cavallotto of Cavallotto, Bruno Rocca of the winery of the same name and Ornella Correggia of Matteo Correggia. All 3 wineries will be providing large format bottles of wines from their cellars to enable us to experience their aged wines with perfect provenance. We are grateful to Water and Wine for making this dinner possible.

The Cavallotto estate is located at the gates of Castiglione Falletto in the heart of the Barolo area, on Bricco Boschis. The Bricco Boschis, cultivated as a monopole cru by the Cavallotto family since 1928, yields wines of great body suitable for long cellaring, but with a sweet and ripe tannic structure and aromas of great complexity and fullness. In vintages of normal, cool or even wet conditions, the well-drained site produces profound “classically-styled” wines of great length of flavor. The Cavallottos have been owners and producers for five generations. Laura and her brothers Giuseppe and Alfio, who are both oenologists, continue to produce wines exclusively from the grapes produced on the estate.

With its philosophy ,“Wine is the mirror and soul of the earth, our territory, which is to be protected and defended as a faithful ally”
the Rabajà di Bruno Rocca Company’s wines, made using grapes from land which has been expertly nurtured since the company’s outset, offer the perfect expression of this combination. The vineyards owned by the company are spread out across a planted surface of 15 hectares and are mostly centred around Barbaresco, in the Rabajà area. The work is carried out by Bruno and his son Francesco, who is in charge of the oenological and agronomic stages.

Matteo Correggia took up the management of the family farm in 1985 and began a quest to put Roero on the map. The sandy, mineral rich soils of the area is typically know for the production of Arneis. However, Matteo knew Roero could produce a profound and special expression of Nebbiolo and the first releases, including the La Val dei Preti occurred in 1987 . He grew the family estate and by the end of the 90's had solidified Correggia as one of the Langhe's best red wine producers. His untimely death in 2000 saw his wife Ornella forming a team to continue in Matteo's footsteps. Together they have fulfilled many of Matteo's dreams for the estate to make hand crafted, high quality wines that are representative of Roero.

The venue for our dinner is La Barca, also known as ‘the boat,’ featuring the cuisine of Michele Sorrentino, who was the chef and owner of Antica Trattoria Botteganova in Siena, Italy until he sold it in 2009. Chef Michele received his Michelin star in 1999 and maintained it throughout the lifetime of his restaurant. Antica Trattoria Botteganova was on Frommer’s guide’s “Top Ten Restaurants of Italy” from 2000 to 2008.

Given the absolute value of this dinner, please book early to avoid disappointment.
