GIANNI GAGLIARDO GEMS of BAROLO
il Cielo, Hilton Hotel

Dear Members,

For our second event in November, we are pleased to welcome Stefano Gagliardo, a sixth-generation grape grower, winemaker and one of the three brothers who now run Gianni Gagliardo. The Gagliardo family has been deeply rooted in the cultivation and production of wines in Piemonte since 1848, and it is Stefano’s father, Gianni Gagliardo, who had helped his father-in-law develop the original vineyard at Serra dei Turchi, and winery into what it is today.

Of the eleven official communes within the Barolo appellation, Gianni Gagliardo now has vineyards located in five of the best communes – Serralunga d’Alba, Monteforte d’Alba, Verduno, Barolo and La Morra. Within these, they have ten Barolo single vineyards in different MGAs (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva, or Cru’s.) In addition, the family has a Barbera single vineyard in Monforte, named San Sebastiano, and three other vineyards in the commune of Monticello d’Alba within Roero.

Stefano has been passionate about wine from an early age, hence becoming an oenologist was a natural consequence. Starting from the 2013 vintage, Stefano decided to start separating all the single vineyards into Micro Crus, a new and unique approach for Barolo. Stefano does this by taking tiny selections of the best bunches and generating a small range of new wines. Stefano is now considered part of an elite group of vintners representing a new and innovative next generation of winemakers in Barolo.

With the generosity of Water & Wine and of course the Gagliardo family, we are privileged to be tasting 5 of their Barolos, the Barbera and even the Chinato.

Complementing these wines is the contemporary Italian cuisine of il Cielo, that combines Italian flavours with the unique Japanese flair of Chef Yohhei Sasaki. Chef Sasaki was classically trained in the art of Italian cuisine in top Italian restaurants in Japan. Steadfast to constant learning and improvisation, Chef Sasaki left Tokyo in 2008 to be trained in top one-to-three Michelin-starred Italian restaurants in Tuscany and Lombardia, where he perfected his skills.

We look forward to an evening of Italian wine and cuisine that combines tradition and innovation. Please sign up early to partake of what promises to be a classically Italian evening. Members will have priority for booking in the first 48 hours in the usual manner. Please see the attached menu and booking form.
