It has been some
time since you have last heard
from us. Your committee reckoned
that with the recent festivities,
majority of our members would
have attended more than their
fair share of lunches and dinners
and therefore, would appreciate
a rest for the poor stomachs.
As such, no events have been planned
in February 2009.
However, we believe that it is
time to rekindle the fellowship
that we hold so dear to our hearts
and therefore, allow us to kick
off this year with a modest Italian
event, which we intend to keep
it small.
For this event, we will be featuring
a relatively new kid on the block,
a small restaurant called COVA
Pasticceria Confetteria, located
on the ground floor at the back
of Paragon Shopping Centre. The
antique Cova Pastisserie, was
founded in 1817 by Antonio Cova,
a soldier in Napoleon’s
army, and situated in front of
the Scala theatre in Milan. It
soon became a meeting place where
the most famous artists, writers
and musicians used to meet after
theatre to talk about performances
and plays, or simply to discuss
about history and politics, drinking
a cup of coffee and tasting delicious
pastries.
In 1943, during the Second World
War, Cova was bombed together
with the Scala theatre. Two years
later, Cova was re-built and in
1950 it moved to Via Montenapoleone,
where it is now. Located in the
beating heart of the historical
centre, in a city of fashion and
business, Cova has always been
a milestone, a meeting place not
only for Milanese, but also for
international clients. In the
last 10 years, Cova has expanded
its brand name and tradition throughout
different countries and cultures
and landed in Asia. In 1993, Cova
opened in Hong Kong a nice Café
and several boutiques and quickly
captured the most refined palates
with all its traditional sweets
and a wide choice of elegant products.
For some years now, Cova has taken
the sea aboard “Celebrity
Cruises” ships, sailing
the tropical seas of the Caribbean,
Mexico, South America up to the
Far North, among Alaskan iced
mountains, to sweeten and cherish
their passengers’ moments
and become one of their most pleasant
souvenirs.
In June 2008, Cova arrived in
Singapore and the Society proudly
