specially arranged event for Pinot
lovers. Pinot Fantasy - basically,
is a chance for members to taste
the very rare collection of old
and new world pinots that we have
in our cellar and to judge their
aging potential. Also, the members
get to contrast them with a grand
cru burgundy - the Clos Vougeot
and decide for yourselves which
you like better.
These fantastic wines will be
paired with equally delicious
food that is specially prepared
by the Chiara – which stands
where the former Reif + James
restaurant was at The Pier –
helmed by a pair of Austrian chefs
but Italian-themed. The restaurant
is named after Esmirada owner
Wolfgang Lapper’s daughter,
befittingly in part because it’s
the newest baby in this group
that runs the successful Brasserie
Wolf just a few doors away and
the popular Esmirada Mediterranean
restaurant over at Orchard Road.
If you’ve been to Reif +
James before, there’ll be
that sense of familiarity since
the decor – down to the
drum shaped lamps – has
largely been retained. It has
been jazzed up, though, with fancy
accents like a crystal chandelier
aka disco ball at the entrance.
Taking its cue perhaps from the
decor, twin chefs Michael and
Manuel Gruber present their dishes
in quite a formal, fine-dining
style – so don’t expect
Chiara to be a homey Italian place.
The chefs might use Italian elements
in their cooking, but the cooking
is very much modern European.
So, don’t miss this wonderful
chance to savour the best of Italian
cuisine that is paired with great
pinots, both from the new and
old worlds, which is bound to
titillate each and every of your
