Dear Members,
Happy 4th of July with Dominus in 4 vintages
If there ever were a winery in California that might be considered a First Growth, it would be Dominus Estate in Napa Valley.
The vineyards on the gentle slopes Mayacamas Range of Yountville appellation has an impressive wine history that connects as far as the 1850s or earlier when vines first spread their roots. Back then, it was knows as Napanook vineyard, which became the inspiration for Dominus second bottling. But it was in the 1940s that Dominus found recognition when John Daniel purchased the property. He is known as a pioneer of Napa Valley for his time at Inglenook. As it progress into the 1960s, Dominus was discovered by Christian Moueix, and together with Robin Lial and Marcia Smith (daughters of John Daniel), it progress steadily into what it is known today.
During the same time, Christian Moueix was working with his family in Pomerol who owned Petrus, Chateau Trotanoy and Chateau La Fleur Petrus. He had access to incredible expertise and knowledge during Dominus formative years, which saw Jean Claude Berrouet, the Winemaker for Petrus and other Moueix family owned and managed estates involved in the production of Dominus. The trio-partnership lasted 12 years and Christian Moueix became the sole proprietor of Dominus Estate in 1995.
Dominus Estate produces Bordeaux inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is between 15 to 25 years. The most notable vintage for Dominus Estate is 1983 when Christian, Robin and Marcia first came together; marking it as their first vintage.
The age worthiness of Dominus wines has been very well recognized. We are glad that over the years, we have the opportunity to procure some of the older vintages of Dominus for an occasion such as this, the celebration of the 4th of July.
We are fortunate to be able to secure some 1983, the first vintage of Christian, Robin and Marcia, which has been described to be “full-bodied with a deep tannic structure”, rustic and bright. The 1995 has “handsomely balanced flavor, lively and fresh…with exceptional suppleness”. The 1996 vintage has “silky tannins, long and complex finish that balances the warm, luscious and elegant body.” And 2002 vintage saw a small yield in production, but a wine of harmonious and balanced….with flavors of caramel cacao, cinnamon and warm chutney.”
