It gives me great pleasure to announce to you our much anticipated
members only event - Four Decades of
St Emilion, which will be held at Lucas
Restaurant on Saturday, the 27th February
2010.
We will be putting together flights
of st emilion wines from the 70s, 80s
and 90s, highlighting wines from the
3 different Pavie estates and culminating
in a last flight featuring the RP 100
pointer Chateau Pavie 2000 .This wine
has been donated by our very kind sponsor
and we are grateful for his generosity.
The name Pavie, appears to have been
derived from pavies, describing the
deeply coloured peaches that once grew
on the site. There are three Pavie vineyards
clustered around St Emilion, Chateau
Pavie itself, Chateau Pavie-Decesse
and Chateau Pavie- Macquin. All three
were once part of the holdings of Ferdinand
Bouffard, a 19th Century Bordeaux négociant
who owned numerous vineyards in St Emilion.
Chateau Pavie was acquired by Alexandre
Valette in 1943. This was the beginning
of what some regard as a golden era
for Chateau Pavie and certain critics,
such as Clive Coates, rated the wines
of the Valette era very highly. 1998
saw the acquisition of the estate by
Gérard Perse, a supermarket magnate.
Perse has taken the domaine in a new
modern direction by bringing in controversial
wine consultant Michel Rolland. Members
will get a chance to taste the 1978
Pavie from the Valette era and the 1999
and 2000 from the Perse era and make
their own decision as to which they
favour!
The history of Château Pavie Decesse
is inextricably linked with that of
Château Pavie. From 1850 to 1943,
the successive owners of Pavie Decesse
were always the same as the owners of
Pavie. In 1943, Pavie Decesse was sold
to a Monsieur Marzelle. In 1970, following
the death of her husband, Madame Marzelle
decided to delegate management to Jean-Paul
Valette, the owner of Château
Pavie. Accordingly, the 1988 Pavie Decesse
is another example of the Valette style
of winemaking.
Pavie - Macquin is owned by the Corre
family, who since 1995 have contracted
Nicolas Thienpont to manage the estate,
whilst Stéphane Derenoncourt
has control over the vinification. On
the occasion of the reclassification
of the Saint Emilion chateaux in September
2006, Chateau Pavie Macquin was promoted
to the level of Premier Grand Cru Classé.
It is paired at this event with the
1998 Chateau Monbousquet which is also
owned by Gerard Perse!
